Spotting Fake Amoxicillin and Other Antibiotics Sold in the Philippines – Telegram @links_dealer

Why Fake Amoxicillin Keeps Showing Up in Filipino Medicine Cabinets

Amoxicillin is one of the most dispensed antibiotics in the country, and that popularity is exactly what makes it a target. The Food and Drug Administration regularly publishes advisories on unregistered drug products, and counterfeit amoxicillin capsules turn up in sari-sari stores, at tiangge stalls, and on social media pages that promise “buy 2 take 1” pricing too good to be true. A capsule sold for ₱8 when the drugstore charges ₱18 to ₱25 should raise suspicion immediately.

The danger is not just that the medicine does nothing. Underdosed or fake antibiotics let bacteria survive, and that is how resistance builds — the same resistance that makes a simple wound infection harder to treat later. For a child with a perianal abscess or an adult recovering from an appendicitis operation, a counterfeit course can mean a return trip to the hospital.

Genuine amoxicillin from a licensed manufacturer carries a lot number, an expiration date printed in clean, smudge-free ink, and a registration number you can check against the FDA’s verified drug list. The capsule shell should be uniform, the powder inside free of clumps, and the foil blister intact. Loose capsules repacked into a plastic sachet with a marker-written label are the classic counterfeit format.

How to Verify an Online Pharmacy Before You Pay

Since the e-commerce boom, many Filipinos order antibiotics through Facebook pages or Shopee and Lazada sellers. A legitimate online pharmacy must display its FDA License to Operate and the name of its registered pharmacist. Search that license number on the FDA verification portal — the same way you would check a drug’s registration. If the seller cannot produce a license or dodges the question, walk away.

Check the physical address. A real pharmacy lists a street address and a landline, not just a mobile number and GCash details. Ask whether a pharmacist will review your prescription; legitimate sellers require one for antibiotics. Be wary of pages that sell amoxicillin, tramadol, and other prescription drugs openly without asking for a prescription at all.

Payment method matters too. Bank transfer to a registered company account and cash on delivery are safer than sending money to a personal e-wallet with no receipt. Keep the official receipt and the packaging until the course is finished, in case you need to report a reaction or file a complaint with the FDA.

Antibiotics for Cats and Other Pets: Same Rules Apply

Pet owners often ask a friend for leftover amoxicillin when their cat has a wound or a respiratory infection. This is risky. Doses for cats are calculated by weight and by the specific bacteria involved, and some human formulations contain excipients that upset a pet’s stomach. A vet in Metro Manila typically charges ₱500 to ₱1,500 for a consultation, which is cheaper than treating a complication from the wrong drug.

If a veterinarian does prescribe amoxicillin for your cat, buy from a licensed veterinary pharmacy or a drugstore that stocks veterinary-grade products, and follow the full course. Stopping early because the cat seems better is the most common mistake and a direct contributor to resistant infections.

Practical Habits That Protect Your Household

Buy only from drugstores with a visible pharmacist on duty and ask for the generic version if the branded one strains your budget — the active ingredient is the same. Store capsules away from heat and moisture; a bathroom cabinet in a tropical house is a poor choice. Never share leftover antibiotics with a neighbour, and never self-medicate a child’s fever without a doctor’s assessment.

If you suspect a product is counterfeit, report it to the FDA through its online complaint form and keep the packaging as evidence. For chronic conditions that require regular medicine — diabetes maintenance drugs, for instance — building a relationship with one trusted pharmacy makes it easier to spot changes in packaging or price that signal a problem.

Finally, treat antibiotics as a finite resource. Every unnecessary or incomplete course, whether for a person or a pet, reduces their power for the next patient who truly needs them.
